D28 from 2010, strings to try

Before buying loads of different string types to try, I think its a good idea to ask here.

My D28 is a straight braced guitar, very balanced and comfy. For the last few years it has had a 0.12 (lights) phosphor bronze string set on it. (Different brands but always 0.12's.) I played blues on it along with chord/strumming stuff so mediums were a bit much for bending.

Nowadays I have a little parlor guitar that does blues a lot better, so I want to experiment with string gauges and types on the D28.

I use 0.12's on my other dread (Atkin D37) which is closer to a HD28 (thinner top, lacquer, scalloped braces) and that guitar really prefers this gauge.

I want to bring out the best sound in this particular instrument - I know they are sold with mediums but I am not sure if I should focus on gauge or material first. 80/20, Monel, medium-lights, retro strings are all worth consideration.

I realize this is not a very original topic or question, and its very subjective, but I'd appreciate your opinions and arguments. Whats worth trying, and what's not?
