Some advice for new international students here?
Hey everyone! I'm an incoming PhD student at UVA starting this fall, coming from China. Super excited but also a little overwhelmed with the prep work — trying to get as much sorted as possible before I actually land.
A few things I'd love some input on:
- Getting from IAD to Charlottesville & local transportation
What's the go-to way to get from IAD to Charlottesville when you first arrive? Also, for getting around locally — I know there are a few bus options but they seem pretty different in terms of reliability and frequency. Which ones do people actually use day-to-day? And for carpooling or asking for rides (especially as a new student without a car), is there a common app or group people use around here?
- Essential apps for daily life
I've already got WhatsApp, Instagram, Discord, Facebook, Reddit, PayPal, and Lyft set up. Anything I'm missing that locals swear by? (Grocery delivery, banking, food, transit, etc.)
- Social life as an international student
Any tips on finding community early, especially before classes start?
I'm trying to get set up before I land so I'm not scrambling on day one. Any advice appreciated — even the small stuff nobody thinks to mention!
