A School Production of Cabaret
It's spring, which means all the high schools are putting on their annual musical. I had the choice between seeing Mamma Mia at my old Alma Mater or Cabaret at a different high school. I think I made the right decision.
One think I found interesting about this school was that the lobby had what I guess you could call "special features", which were placards with behind the scenes information about the production. This production came up with a backstory for the club that it was built in an abandoned warehouse. That way they could use exposed brick that could double as both the club and Cliff's dingy apartment.
In any production of Cabaret, the biggest test is how the lead actress performs the title song. In this case she decided to play the character drunk. Right before she starts singing we see her chug a big cocktail. What I find interesting about this take is that we know she gets an abortion in the next scene. So her drinking reinforces how little she cares.
My biggest complaint was during "Tomorrow Belongs To Me". At the end of the song you see the actors all raising their arm but never go into full Nazi salute. That felt like a missed opportunity.
