I haven't really loved any Medical Drama except House MD

  • Most medical dramas go touchy-feely & goody-goody - which House's show doesn't

  • Other medical dramas don't have Hugh Laurie - he is 50% of the reason why House MD is so good!

House MD main diagnostic plot lines are quite formulaic in some ways - House's first diagnosis is always mostly wrong, even the 2nd diagnosis is mostly wrong & usually at the last minute observing, reading or hearing about something unrelated takes him to the right diagnosis. But each episode still has so much good stuff going on that I can accept the formulaic diagnostic plot. Plus the OPD cases (clinic hours) which he takes on in many episodes are pure Sherlock Holmes.

If I rank House as 9 out of 10, here is how I would ranking other medical shows I have tried watching

  1. New Amsterdam - 4 out of 10 Totally unrealistic is so many ways - In one episode they go & perform a procedure at a different hospital pretending to be a different doctor, in another they give an apartment to a homeless guy - the unrealistic stuff keeps piling on. Then of course, the whole show is goody goody & sweet enough to make one nauseous. Watched only 12 episodes before quitting

  2. ER - 6 out of 10

Not a bad show - I would have probably liked it much more if I had seen it say 30 years back when it started - but it doesn't seem fresh since it's so old. Watched only Season 1

  1. The Pitt - 7 out of 10

This is a pretty decent show - it's kind of a fresher version of ER. Watched whatever is released till now

  1. The Good Doctor - 5 out of 10

A very touchy feely show. It's almost like a soap opera with medicine only being incidental

I think I watched 3-4 seasons

  1. The Resident - 4.5 out of 10

I didn't like the lead guy - I found him too cocky - he can't carry it the way Hugh Laurie does

Watched 5-6 episodes

  1. Doc Martin - 6.5 out of 10

I saw this quite long back - I am not even sure it can be called a medical drama. It focuses on the quirky personality of the lead & his relationship with the heroine (Caroline Catz who is quite endearing)

Anyone have any recommendations for any medical shows which come close to House MD?
