When you die you don’t go to heaven or hell. You wake up on the edge of a cliff with your arm draped over the edge, feeling the wind pass through your fingers and as you get up you develop a headache so loud it feels like your head is about to explode. With your disoriented vision you look to your left and see an endless stretch of cliffs and then even more cliffs on top of that, but when you look to your right you see a bar with a big neon sign in the shape of an arrow that says “Bar” right next to it. The bar is so close to the edge of the cliff that you could breathe on the other side and knock it over into the endless abyss over the edge. With your splitting headache you think a drink could solve your troubles, so you walk into the bar.
When you walk in you immediately notice that it seems to be that you and the bartender are the only two patrons here. As you walk towards the bartender, your disoriented shuffle causing your feet to drag along the wooden floor, the bartender will greet you with a polite nod and a “howdy stranger.” When you finally shuffle your way to the counter you’ll ask if the bartender has something that can cure a headache of monumental proportions such as yours. The bartender puts a glass of liquid on the bartop. “What is this?”
You’ll ask.“ Your cure.” The bartender will say. “But what is it?” Is what you’ll respond with. “It's whatever you want it to be, a soda, a drink, or just a glass of water if you're one of those types.” You think what the hell, and as you take a sip from the glass you’ll feel that headache whisk away like it was never even there in the first place. Letting out a sigh of relief. “You're a goddamn lifesaver Mr. Bartender.”
You’ll pull out your wallet that is occupied by a single quarter, but when you look at the quarter you notice that it doesn't have a face or a tail, it’s completely blank. As you reach for the quarter, the bartender will wave his hand, “that won’t be necessary, everything here is on the house.” You put the wallet back into your pocket and now with a clear head you take a second viewing of the bar, you now notice that every seat is now occupied by static holographic images of yourself frozen in time some of them look happy, some of them look sad, some of them you can’t really tell what their feeling. You turn back and ask the bartender what's up with the frozen versions of yourself taking up all the seats. “Oh those are moments of your life that you deem as important, like a first kiss, or a deep conversation with a friend, that kind of stuff.” They are frozen in time because you can walk into them to view the moment in its entirety….go on ahead, try to walk in one.” Maybe you’ll ask if they are dangerous and the bartender will respond with “probably not, it really depends on the moment…which is for you to find out.”
Taking the bartender's advice you walk into a moment of your choosing and are immediately taken into that moment but as a third person onlooker. You also notice a cassette player in your hand, testing it out you realize that the player allows you to rewind, fast forward, and pause at any time during the moment. As you watch the moment you can sense everything, it feels like you're right there back in that exact moment. The touch of a person's hand leaves a warm feeling where you're standing even though you haven't been touched, the words that are spoken to you enter your ear like they are being spoken directly in front of it, even though no one is speaking to you. All the senses you experience, feel like they are happening to you in real time. When you're finished viewing the moment you leave walking back to the bartender, “so what the hell do I do in this place?” “Eat, drink, and watch all these moments of your life to your fullest content, there is no time limit here.”...... “What happens when I leave?” You say back. The bartender takes a long and slow look at you and responds with a smirk and a shrug. This would probably make you suspicious, but then you think what else am I going to do here, go back outside and walk the cliff edge?
With your newfound knowledge you decide to order another drink and revisit these moments to your heart's content, some you rewind because they make you laugh or cry, some you fast forward because you said something embarrassing or awkward, and some you pause to really be able to live in that moment again, maybe you even sit down next to your past self and think how much you’ve grown from that moment. When you're satisfied with your time spent you walk to the counter and place the quarter on the counter now appearing to have a face and a tail.
Heading towards the exit you give the bartender a final wave and walk out the door, when you look back you notice the bar is gone. It doesn't leave a single inkling that it was even there in the first place. No sign, no nothing. Turning your head back you end up looking towards the endless stretch that fills your vision, cliffs upon cliffs with a side of cliffs to spare. You head towards the cliff edge and begin to walk, your arms spread wide feeling the lonely wind pass through your clothes causing it to ripple and flap against you. With no purpose ahead of you. You walk an aimless walk of no true destination and no true journey, but a true simple smile spread across your lips.
