Rust converters, worth trying?

For those of you unaware, tannins and rust creates a thick coating which stops rust from spreading (Tannic acid + Iron Oxide = ferric tannate) These are the ingredients in commercial rust converters.

My question for anyone who's done this to their tools, how do moving parts like hinges and sharp edges keep? Is it worth doing to tools like secateurs?
