Richard Horne hit and run

In episode 6 of The Return, we have that long, drawn out sequence. Richard Horne, in a blind rage, drives through a stop sign and plows through a child in the street. That is followed by one the most harrowing scenes in all of Twin Peaks, as the mother cradles her dead child and wails in despair as the saddest song Angelo Badalamenti has ever written plays in the background.

Oof. I know David Lynch was fascinated by the deepest pits of darkness and despair, but this scene was especially rough. A friend of mine left the room in tears and stopped watching The Return altogether. And she is a huge Lynch/Peaks fan.

I know the point was most likely to show how psychotic Richard Horne was. And obviously, Twin Peaks is a pretty dark show when all is said and done. Death is a major plot point, I know. My question is, did Lynch have to go this dark? It really is the most difficult part of The Return to watch. It’s the moment I always anticipate when I have watched The Return. I have fast forwarded through it a few times. I always wince and think to myself, “Really, David? You had to go to these depths of despair?”

I know the answer is yes. 💀 What are other people’s thoughts on this scene?
