Do upgrades make you keep your 1st Gen 4Runner longer?

One thing I love about the 1st Gen 4Runner is how many owners focus on keeping these trucks alive instead of replacing them. Most of the talk seems to be about maintenance, restoration, suspension, gearing, and a few tasteful upgrades.

I've been wondering if those changes actually make ownership more enjoyable long term, or if keeping it close to stock is the better move.

Do mods make you more attached to your 4Runner, or do reliability and originality matter more?

For those who've owned one for years, what upgrade or maintenance item made the biggest difference?
