Hi everyone,
I’m looking for book recommendations that focus primarily on the military career and campaigns of Charlemagne. I am specifically interested in tactical details, logistics, and the progression of his various wars.
I currently have the following in my cart:
• Charlemagne by Roger Collins
• King and Emperor: A New Life of Charlemagne by Janet L. Nelson
• Charlemagne: Father of a Continent by Alessandro Barbero
• Two Lives of Charlemagne by Einhard and Notker the Stammerer
I also looked into Charlemagne's Early Campaigns (768-777) by Bernard Bachrach. This seems exactly like what I’m looking for, but it’s currently a bit outside my price range. I would love to find something similar in depth but more accessible.
My questions for the group:
Do the books listed above go into significant detail regarding his military campaigns, or are they more focused on the administrative/religious aspects of his reign?
Are there any other suggestions for "military-first" histories of the Carolingian Empire?
Thanks in advance
