Introduction

For the most part, r/audiodrama is a rather open community that accepts submissions covering a wide range of audio drama topics and styles, from full-cast productions and narrated stories to things like role-playing games.

There have occasionally been situations where a decision needed to be made about whether certain types of posts should be allowed. When that happens and the decision results in an official rule being added to the sidebar, the best approach is to present the proposal to the r/audiodrama community so the issue can be discussed and some kind of general consensus can be reached about what the rule should be.

One issue that's become increasingly relevant across many communities, including the audio drama community, is the use of AI. The topic has come up in this subreddit several times, with discussion and debate surrounding AI in general, as well as specific aspects of its use. At this point, it seems prevalent enough that an official stance should be taken.

The sidebar already covers several topics that aren't currently allowed here. While AI could simply be added as another bullet point, its use and scope seem widespread enough to warrant its own rule.

At the same time, AI is a particularly complex and contentious subject, and people have strong opinions about it. Before establishing any specific rules, it would be worthwhile to have a more nuanced discussion about the different ways AI is being used and which, if any, should be addressed by the subreddit.

The Current Proposal

I've drafted two new rules to be added to the sidebar. One specifically addresses AI, while the second concerns producers whose shows may or may not use AI but whose content the community might not want here. I'll elaborate below.

Here is the current draft of the proposed rules:

>6. AI-Generated Content

>All AI-generated audio and visual content must be clearly identified in every post or comment promoting a production that uses it.

>Productions featuring 100% AI-generated audio are not permitted here.

>Posts and comments about productions that rely heavily on AI-generated content, including visual elements, may be removed at the discretion of the moderation team.

>Audio drama shows that use human actors but incorporate AI-generated images, as well as productions that use AI for things such as vocal effects or music, are currently permitted provided these elements are clearly identified. Allowing such content does not constitute an endorsement by the moderation team or the community. Members are free to express their opinions about the use of AI in these productions.

>7. Disallowing Posts From Specific Producers

>Posts promoting content from certain producers may be disallowed based on criteria established by the moderation team and community input.

>At this time, posts promoting shows created by the following producer are not permitted:

Why Establish a Rule About AI-Generated Content?

Because there's a lot of it, including a lot that members don't see. This subreddit receives a significant number of posts promoting shows that use AI-generated content, and many of them are caught by Reddit's automated filters. Sometimes the people behind those posts contact me asking for their submissions to be approved, but lately, I've chosen not to approve them because I wanted to make this post about establishing a rule regarding AI use in this subreddit.

At the same time, the subreddit currently encourages producers to promote "audio drama in all its various forms." Since there's no official rule prohibiting AI-generated content, there's technically no reason not to approve those posts.

Establishing an official rule would give the moderation team a reason for removing or declining posts that fall under it. It could also discourage people from submitting this type of content in the first place, if that's what the community decides.

Why Not Ban Anything and Everything That Uses AI?

Because AI is a lot of different things. It can be something that mindlessly churns out slop in response to a single prompt, but it can also be a tool used in various aspects of production.

Then there's the question of what can actually be verified. We can only rely on what we can see and hear, along with any information provided by the people who make the posts. Rules should be used to address issues when they arise, rather than express the general sentiment of the community.

Why Make Specific Allowances for Some Forms of AI Content?

I think having a rule banning content that is "100% AI-generated audio" or that "relies heavily on AI-generated content" would rid this subreddit of a lot of posts involving AI-generated content.

This subreddit gets a lot of posts from people with YouTube channels featuring videos with AI-generated voices and visuals. Many of these posts get filtered and are never seen by members. Assuming that the community here doesn't want to see them, it would be nice to have an established rule that could potentially dissuade people from making those posts. The same could apply to audio podcasts.

But some productions use AI elements alongside a majority of traditional production techniques, or don't use AI in the production itself but use it for their artwork. I think it's worth allowing those types of posts because they primarily use traditional production techniques. It also allows others to comment on them, hopefully politely and constructively, which is why there's a specific comment about this in the rule proposal.

I've seen more than one example of someone posting about a show that uses AI in some fashion, which received negative feedback, and the producer decided to replace those elements with more traditional alternatives. I think those are discussions worth having here.

Why a Separate Rule Disallowing Posts From Specific Producers?

Along with this subreddit getting a number of posts from people who make AI-generated audio shows, it also gets posts from organizations that I believe this community wouldn't want to see here. What I'm mainly referring to is podcast "content farms" which are organizations that continuously create new content, sometimes using AI but also sometimes using real human voice actors. These organizations are usually rather nefarious in their business practices.

In the past, I made a post asking about this community's opinion of a company called Headfone, which employed human voice actors but did so in a way that seemed more focused on churning out content than on creating traditional forms of entertainment. The subreddit was getting bombarded with posts from that organization, and many of them tried to disguise their association with Headfone rather than be upfront about it. The response from the community was to disallow those posts. That did not result in an official rule, but I think it would be good to establish one.

There haven't been any posts from Headfone in a while, but there's a more recent example of this happening here again with a company called Pocket FM, which Forbes has described as a content farm.

Posts from Pocket FM are really hitting the subreddit hard right now, and so many of them are just... sneaky. Besides posting about shows made there, there are a number of submissions in the form of regular suggestion threads that are formatted like, "Hey guys! What are some good mystery podcasts? I've listened to so many good ones on Pocket FM that I need more! They have so many good ones!" and so on. They've also employed URL shorteners and redirectors to get around Reddit's filters, which don't seem to like them.

The current wave of Pocket FM posts may eventually subside, but there's a possibility that other organizations, or maybe even individuals, could try to do the same thing in the future, most likely utilizing AI. But even if they don't, I think having a list of disallowed producers would be a good thing. I don't think it should be used lightly, and each instance should always be brought before the community for a decision. It should be reserved for producers that are "scammy," for lack of a better word, or "content farms" as this example. The list could then be updated as different issues crop up.

Conclusion

That is the new rules proposal in its first draft and the reasoning behind the various parts of it. Establishing new rules should come from the community, so that's why this post is here and will remain pinned to the top of the subreddit for some time in order for as many people as possible to see it and possibly add their own input.

This isn't meant to be a debate about the ethics and consequences of using AI. It's meant to be a discussion about what we want to see posted here on this subreddit, although I realize some of those issues may play a part in some people's opinions.

Establishing a rule about a topic like AI is a significant step. While some people may desire a blanket ban on anything related to AI, I think starting off like this is a good first step.

We can add to or amend these rules at any time.
