Edit: Title should be “mis-matched”

I’m active in r/autism_parenting and a post about Peter Pan syndrome made me wonder if folks in r/specialed had thoughts about the appropriate schooling for a teen whose social-emotional age is much younger than their chronological and cognitive age.

My 16 year old AuDHD teen has been suspended again from his public high school, the third time this year.

He is extremely socially motivated, and this last occurrence being due to making physical contact with a student that was the ex-girlfriend of a “frenemy” who supposedly told him to go be mean to his ex-girlfriend. With the communication/perspective taking difficulties my teen has, it’s unclear if this frenemy actually said what my teen claims or if he completely went off of his own internal script for how “friends” act toward their friend’s ex-girlfriends.

I fear something similar is bound to happen again unless he quickly matures social-emotionally and he will be expelled. What alternative setting should be advocate for if that happens? Related to this, is there anything more we can do to help him develop social-emotional maturity?
