How to Request a Grade Reconsideration from a Professor

Hi guys,

I’m a first-year here.

Last week on Monday, I had major complications related to a surgery I had in December. This also happened to be right on the date of my online midterm (the rule was to log on within 20 minutes of its posting).

Following that day, I had to travel back home and was in/out of appointments all week, until I returned to Davis on Wednesday. It was overall an incredibly difficult week for me health wise, especially mentally. I needed to put all schoolwork aside and focus on myself.

I provided my professor a surgery note this Thursday after I returned (notating that I had this surgery as well as the possibility for numerous post-ops), and he gave me the opportunity to take it, but at half credit. So I took it.

While I truly appreciated the opportunity, I feel that this is still not a fully fair opportunity given my situation was completely out of my control, and something like this has permanently removed my chance of getting an A in this class (I was on track to get one, have engaged with all class material before this, completed all papers on time, etc).

Do you guys think it’s wise to go to office hours to ask for full points given the scenario? My worry is that I’ve already explained it to him and he’s already come to the consensus I should get half points off, but I feel maybe if I re-explain what happened in-person it might change his answer.

Just looking for advice from more experienced students.
