Transitioning from HS Choir to Elementary
I have taught HS Choir for 6 years at the same school. First job out of college. I LOVE my job and I LOVE my kids. Recently, circumstances have changed and it’s time for me to move on. I have a 4 month old baby at home and want a change of pace (less after school rehearsals, no spring musical, less weekend/overnight obligations) so I’m interviewing for elementary music positions. I’m super excited about the change and look forward to introducing meaningful musical experiences to younger kids. But at the same time I feel totally out of my element. Has anyone made this transition? What are the important things I need to know/do? I’m staying in the same school district and I believe the district subscribes to Quaver for all elementary schools. Do I need any other curriculum? I’m not Orff certified but have experience with Orff instruments from college. I also have experience teaching ukulele from teaching HS general music. I use the Takadimi rhythm system with my high school kids so will probably stick with that in elementary. And of course I’m very familiar with solfège. I am not a great pianist. In high school it didn’t matter so much but am I going to struggle at elementary if I’m not a great player? I mean, I can get by but I certainly won’t be accompanying any concerts.
Any advice, tips, things to consider, etc would be super appreciated.
TL;DR- I am moving from HS choir to Elementary General Music. What do I need to know?
