Did anyone else completely change what they wanted after visiting homes in person?

Funny how different the whole home building process feels once you stop researching online and actually start walking through homes in person.

A month ago I thought I wanted the biggest layout possible with all the upgrades and fancy finishes.

But after visiting a few homes recently, I realised I’m paying way more attention to smaller practical things now — natural light, storage, room flow, quieter spaces and just whether the home feels comfortable overall.

Some homes looked incredible online but felt awkward in person, while a few simpler ones actually surprised me.

Didn’t expect my priorities to change this much honestly.

Curious if anyone else went through the same thing during the research stage.

How are people actually affording homes in Australia right now?

I’ve been looking into the market recently and it honestly feels overwhelming once you start adding everything together. It’s not just the house price anymore — it’s site costs, upgrades, interest rates, living expenses, and everything else on top.

Even people with decent incomes seem stressed about making the wrong decision or stretching too far financially.

I know everyone’s situation is different, but I’m curious how people are approaching it in the current market.

Are most people:

  • lowering expectations?
  • moving further out?
  • delaying plans?
  • just accepting huge repayments?

Feels very different compared to even a few years ago.

I’ve been in the process of shortlisting builders for a while now and was pretty close to finalising Granton Homes for my build.

Everything seemed to line up well — design options, pricing structure, and overall process.

But like most people, I ended up going down the rabbit hole of online research and now I’m slightly unsure again.

Not because of anything specific, but just the general mix of opinions you come across.

For those who’ve already been through this stage — how did you move past that “last moment doubt” before locking in a builder?

I’ve been researching builders recently and noticed a lot of older discussions and reviews online.

But I’m not sure how relevant they actually are today, especially after everything that happened during COVID and supply chain issues.

From what I’ve seen, many builders had delays and mixed feedback during that time, but things seem to have changed recently.

For people who have built in the last 1–2 years — do you think older reviews still matter, or is it better to focus only on recent experiences?
