Got job offer from China, should I go for it?
Hi everyone,
I’m an automotive engineer in the UK with 15+ years of experience. I’ve recently been headhunted by a top Chinese OEM for a technical head role based in Baoding.
Its a very beginning of the process, but the package is very generous (housing, flights, etc.), but I’m hesitant because this would be a massive life change for myself and my family.
I have a few specific concerns:
- Job Security: The contract is for 3 years. Is it common for expats to actually get extended, or is the goal usually to have me train a local team and then be replaced? I’ve seen colleagues go to China and return very quickly; is that a performance issue or a cultural one?
- Work Culture: I’ve heard rumors of the "996" schedule. Is it really that intensive? Currently, I have a great WLB: 37 hours a week, hybrid (2 days in office). I don't mind working hard, but wouldn't want staying in the office to be staying in there if you know what I mean. Also, the contract says 5 days of annual leave. How on earth do people survive on that? Is it negotiable?
- Family & Language: We will be in a 2nd tier industrial city with no family and friends and all my family members don’t speak any Mandarin. Of course we will need to learn, but I know it will take much effort and time. The company provides an international school for my kid, but I’m worried about my wife feeling isolated while I’m at work all day. I am sure I can enjoy the challenges, but I am not too sure if they can. Is it possible to survive with zero Mandarin in there?
I’m treating this as a high-stakes saving mission to bank as much as possible, but I don't want to blow up my family’s happiness in the process.
Would love to hear from anyone who has made a similar move or worked in the Chinese auto industry. Cheers!
