I got tired of arguing with my partner over "What's for dinner?", so I spent the last few months coding a native Android app to fix it.

Hey everyone!

I wanted to show off my latest project that I finally pushed live to production today. It’s a native Android app called Chewsy Meals, and I built it to completely eliminate daily decision fatigue around food.

Whether you are staring blankly at your grocery list for weekly meal prep or trapped in the infinite loop of trying to pick a takeout place with your partner, I wanted a fast, beautiful way to make a choice and move on.

Here is what I built into it:

  • ⚔️ Couple's Clash (Swipe Mode): If you can't agree on what to eat, the app gives you a deck of food cards based on your dietary filters. You and your partner swipe left (Nope) or right (Yum) until the app finds a match you both agreed on.
  • 🎲 Shake-to-Shuffle: If you have zero brain power left after a long day at work, you can physically shake your phone to instantly pull a random meal idea from the database.
  • 🧑‍🍳 Custom Recipe Vault: You can add your own go-to homemade recipes. I actually integrated an on-device AI scanner, so when you upload a photo of your custom meal, it locally verifies that it's actually food before saving it to your list.
  • 🥗 Dietary Profiles: It includes strict filtering matrices so you can lock it to only show Halal, Vegetarian, Vegan, or Kosher suggestions.

I built the entire layout natively using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, focusing heavily on a clean, modern "frosted glass" aesthetic with full dark mode support.

It is completely free on the Google Play Store, has no annoying monthly subscriptions, and operates with a "privacy-first" approach (absolutely zero user data is sent to external servers—everything stays on your device).

If you want to check it out, you can download it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.skendergames.chewsy&pcampaignid=web_share

I'm incredibly proud to finally get this out into the wild. I'd love to know what you think of the design, or if you have any feature ideas you think I should add in the next update! 🍽️📱

I got tired of the "What do you want for dinner?" argument, so I built an app with a Tinder-style swipe mode to solve it.

Hey r/SideProject! 👋

I'm an indie Android dev, and I finally decided to tackle the most universally frustrating question of the day: deciding what to eat.

Whether it's decision fatigue from meal prepping or arguing with a partner over takeout, I wanted a fast, frictionless way to just make the choice and move on. So, I built Chewsy Meals.

Here are the core features I put together to solve the problem:

  • Couple's Clash (Tinder for Food): If you and your partner can't agree, the app generates a deck of food cards based on your filters. You both swipe left (Nope) or right (Yum) until the app finds a match you both agree on.
  • Shake-to-Shuffle: If you have zero brain power left after work, just open the app and physically shake your phone. The engine instantly selects a random meal for you.
  • The Custom Vault: You can build your own database of go-to meals and recipes. (Tech note: I integrated Google ML Kit for on-device image scanning, so when you upload a custom photo, it locally verifies that it's actually food before saving it!)
  • Strict Dietary Filters: Instantly filter out the clutter by locking the app to only show Halal, Vegetarian, Vegan, or Kosher options.

The Tech Stack: Built natively for Android using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.

It is completely free to download, and I would absolutely love some feedback from other builders and creators on the UI/UX or any features you'd like to see added.

Let me know what you think (or if you find any bugs I need to squash)! 🍽️
