Just adopted a dog, she has SD potential. Seeking advice
Hi all! I could use some advice concerning how to initially approach my current situation.
Yesterday I adopted a 16 month old lab from the shelter. From what I’ve heard and seen so far, I think she has great potential to be a SD for me (migraine alert, mobility assistance during episodes being the primary need). I know she’s new to the environment, she’s still young, and I don’t plan to push her quickly or force the position by any means. Right now I’m just acknowledging the potential she has and if she doesn’t work out as a SD that’s totally okay and I will love her all the same! But I’m wondering if there’s anything at all I should be doing during this time while she’s still new here and learning our routines, that might be beneficial in the long run if/when she is ready to start actual training. Just like setting up for success you know? For example, I am married so my husband is usually very involved with our other dog - this is the main root of my curiosity. Should we be making effort during this time to sort of prioritize my bonding with her? From the research I’ve done on self training SD in homes with multiple people, my understanding is that you’ll typically want to be the only family member that trains/give commands. Do I have that right? I guess I’m just curious if it would be a good idea to have me be the main caretaker and the only person at home training basic commands (she already knows to sit so I plan on starting some basics in a way that’s fun for us) or does it not really matter?
P.s. please forgive the length or if I’ve made any mistakes in etiquette. I don’t have much Reddit experience esp with posting. Ty all in advance!
