Staff Attorney Positions

What exactly are staff attorney positions? It seems like you work in biglaw but take a pay cut and work at an hourly rate?

If that’s the case what are the downsides? I see the pay is still around $185k-$300k. If I can get paid that and walk away from work at 5:30pm, that seems great. Are there any reasons why this is not a good idea for someone trying to have better work life balance?

What’s the culture like at Cooley’s Fund Formation group? Anyone worked with them/across from them? Or have any friends working in the group? (if you don’t wanna doxx yourself)

I’m entertaining the idea of applying to their funds team after having a terrible experience with my own firm (working on my own -literally- as a junior to close deals, constantly billing 170-220 hour months, getting called a “moron” -though they apologized afterwards, etc.).

Anywho, thoughts? And is it true funds has the best work-life balance of all the corporate groups (still shit, but better shit)? At my firm that’s not the case.
