Books telling history through architecture

I'm looking for a book that marries the relationship between history and architecture.

My brother doesn't have a favorite book. He doesn't really connect with any art the way that I do. He enjoys art as entertainment but it doesn't really speak to him the way it does to me. He doesn't have a book, a tv show, or movie that changed the way he sees the world. He did say a couple poems have stood out to him over the years but none ever really stuck to him. Nonetheless, he loves to read. We just read differently.

When we were diving into this discussion, he mentioned the closet feeling he gets to what I experience is through architecture. He's a pilot and loves to travel and his favorite part is understanding the history of the architecture. He really enjoys the learning way people used to live and how the architecture is lingering reflection of the history of that era.

He recently went to Scotland and learned about the Closes. Getting to see how people lived and how the architecture impacted their experience was fascinating to him.

His birthday is coming up and I'm trying to find a book that explores history and the role architecture plays in shaping the lives of people.

If you have any recommendations, I'd greatly appreciate them!
