Acetone that I cannot correct
I have attempted to start making a sourdough starter and am failing miserably. I am on week 6 of daily feeds and cannot get it to significantly rise. My "starter" always smells of strong acetone and no matter what I try, I cannot get it to change much. For whatever it's worth, it did give me several false rises early on.
I have tried: Consistent 1:1:1 feedings with bread flour and AP flour
Consistent 1:2:2 feedings " "
Consistent 1:5:5 feedings " "
Consistent 1:10:10 feedings " "
Inconsistent 1:4:5 feedings " "
Feedings ever 8-10 hrs
24 hr feeds
Moving jars to different places throughout my home (home stays around 70°F) I have tried the oven, over my dishwasher, on top of the fridge, ect
Using tap water (found it is likely too chlorinated)
Using spring water from a jug
I mix with silicone spatulas. It is in a Ball jar with a lid.
My starter thickens up and rarely becomes runny.
I am genuinely losing hope and wonder if I should start over. I have tried reading all of the acetone threads and nothing that I try seems to help.
Does someone have a fool proof method to fix my starter?
Shoot, at this point, send me a picture of your kitchen and let me buy starter from you 😵💫
Help!
Sincerely,
The lady who cant make an active starter
