While M. Karunanidhi worked as a screenplay and dialogue writer, he penned scripts for several blockbuster films starring M. G. Ramachandran. Drawn toward the ideals of the Dravidian movement, MGR joined the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam under the leadership of C. N. Annadurai. Annadurai strategically used both Karunanidhi’s writing and MGR’s immense screen presence to popularize Dravidian ideology through cinema. MGR often appeared in DMK’s black-and-red colors and promoted the party’s message in films scripted by Karunanidhi, helping cinema become one of the biggest forces behind the rise of the Dravidian movement in Tamil Nadu. Ironically, decades later, the same power of cinema played a role in weakening one Dravidian party and contributing to another Dravidian leader losing in his own constituency.
