Being tall and using standard length clubs?

I'm very new to the sport, but I have a background in other sports like baseball and hockey, so although I know it's very different, the body mechanics for swinging an instrument to hit something are something I have an understanding of.

When I went to buy my clubs, the guy who helped me explained that it's not really about overall height, but moreso arm length. We did some measurements and he said I should have no issues using standard length clubs. I'm not a giant by any means, I'm 6'2, so pretty tall, but it seemed reasonable to me I could still fall within the average range to use standard length.

The driver feels good, the shorter clubs though, not so much. It feels like I'm constantly topping the ball and can't get under it. My friends, who are more experienced than me, say the clubs do look short, but then sometimes I hit the ball pretty well and it doesn't feel so bad. So I'm confused.

Is it better to get longer shafts now, while I'm still basically brand new to the game, so as not to build bad habits and poor form? Or is the fact I'm so new to the game probably the greatest factor in me not hitting the ball well, and the length isn't really the issue, and instead it's my form? I'd like to build proper form, but lengthening out an entire bag of clubs isn't exactly a cheap option. I would do it, if it's the right thing to do, but I'd rather not do it and not need to if it's my lack of experience that's making me top the ball.
