Recurrent Dreams About Nuclear Fallout
Sorry this is a bit of a yap session. I don’t post on Reddit often.
I normally have rather vivid dreams, but all of them are pretty disjointed. I have noticed recently though that one of the most recurrent themes in many of my dreams is that of nuclear disaster. I don’t actually dream about nuclear war itself, but rather things like reactor meltdowns or mechanical failures in objects like X-ray machines and even microwaves.
I had another radiation dream last night, in which a nuclear reactor located inside of a Yellowstone volcano had failed and exploded. I remember sheltering inside of the hallway of my school from the initial blast with my family, classmates, and teachers. Eventually we had to leave though, because my school hall is essentially an old repurposed church and rations were running low. I can’t remember the specifics, but I do remember protesting the decision to leave as we ventured out into a seemingly untouched wilderness. But we were still very aware of the effects of radiation, and at some point I diverged from the family-classmate group into this bootcamp of children where free hazmat suits were being provided. You could stay and be protected from the radiation under the condition that you lived in the camp and followed the adult’s rules. I suited up and woke up thereafter.
The dreams about reactor meltdowns are different yet formulaic. I’m normally outside of the immediate blast radius, and I get some notice to evacuate or leave. I’m always with my family while we’re evacuating, but I always bear witness to reactor’s blue glow right before it explodes regardless of how far away I am from the impact zone. I also always see mushroom clouds.
In the radiation dreams, I’m always in the immediate vicinity of the object. I remember having a dream about being alone in my kitchen when my microwave suddenly broke and started leaking radiation. It zapped my hands with blue electricity and left me with radiation poisoning and blackened fingers, a little bit like frostbite.
I decided that after the most recent dream I’d try to find someone online who can interpret what my nuclear dreams mean, or if anyone has had similar dreams. Nuclear fallout is a pretty meta theme in dreams after all. Most of the interpretations I’ve seen online are people recounting their Cold War anxiety dreams they had in childhood about MAD, but I’m Gen-Z so I wanted to see whether my reactor meltdown or radiation poisoning dreams meant anything.
