Many smartphone users have experienced situations where their home broadband internet subscriptions finish quickly. In many cases, there is the tendency to quickly blame internet service providers (ISPs) such as MTN Ghana, Telecel Ghana, or AT Ghana. However, this conversation is larger than simply “data finishing quickly.”

While smartphones such as Apple's iPhone allow native tracking of mobile data internet usage per app, Wi-Fi usage is much harder to monitor by default. On Wi-Fi, many mobile apps consume high amounts of data through background activity, automatic updates, and a lack of data saver options.
