Obviously, some of these teams are worse than the teams that won national championships, especially in the Big Ten years, but some of these teams (1975, 1981, 1988, 1989, 2006, 2007, 2023) were definitely better than any of the teams that did win a national championship. Maybe more notably, all but one of their championship losses were by a team that won the regular season championship.
