High Finance Reality Check

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share some real talk for those aiming for a career in high finance. Over the past few months since landing a role on Wall Street (specifically in leveraged ETFs within the Capital Markets sector), I've received plenty of DMs asking for coffee chats and advice. So, I thought I’d give a honest inside look at how things actually work because it’s not all glitz and glamour.

First off, this is not a get-rich-quick scheme. Yes, the pay can be good, but don’t expect to spend all that money easily. You’ll likely be working 9-10 hour days, sometimes more, and many of us work even longer. Remember, you’re paid for your work not to impress others with your lifestyle.

And no, you're not the Wolf of Wall Street. This isn’t party time; it’s hard work. The job is demanding, so only pursue it if you can genuinely enjoy the grind or if you can switch your brain off and just work. If you think a B in accounting will cut it, think again.

Know your stuff. Too many people I talk to have a shaky grasp of basics like options, bond yields, NAV, and how to actually calculate them. These are common interview questions if you don’t know, they’ll move on to someone else.

Regarding internships: a lot of people ask me what they should do for summer roles. Honestly, if you’re not already in finance or don’t have relevant experience, it’s probably too late for this year. Recruiting happens a year in advance, and landing something less than a year out is tough unless you have great connections or a killer resume.

My advice? Stop being delusional. Your resume is never “good enough” there’s always someone trying to outcompete you. If you’re not doing high finance-related activities by your junior or third year, it’s time to face reality. Focus on certifications, reach out to alumni, and build genuine connections this is a game of relationships.

Everyone has dreams, but you have to fight for them. Anyone here is capable just put in the work, stay honest, and you'll have a real shot.

DMs are open, but please ask questions that will genuinely help you. Good luck!
