Dr. Rakesh Sharma became the first Indian to travel to space on April 3, 1984, during the Soyuz T-11 mission. This was a joint crewed space mission between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Soviet Interkosmos program. He spent nearly eight days aboard the Salyut 7 orbital station.
