I’ve been looking into the history of the Wanderjahre (the journeyman years) in Central Europe, particularly during the late 19th century as the traditional guild system was colliding with the rise of the railway.

While we have plenty of records on the social rules of the Walz—like the requirement to stay outside a "ban mile" of one's home—I’m curious about the literal, gritty logistics of their "run-and-gun" lifestyle. These men were essentially professional "guerrilla" workers, carrying their entire livelihood on their backs while moving between masters in different cities.

I’d love to hear from any historians who specialize in labor history or material culture. I’m interested in the "everyday carry" of these tradesmen—the practical, unglamorous details of how they managed to deliver high-end craft while living out of a bundle.

I’m trying to move away from streaming apps

just want a clean offline player for my own files

no ads, no subscription, no account needed ideally

bonus if it has a nice UI and decent library management

what are you using right now
