Hi guys! I am currently planning for Singapore citizenship (SC) and would like some advice on the risks involved. If you’re also a Burmese residing in Singapore and planning to convert to SC, your input would be greatly appreciated!

For background context, I was
born and raised in Singapore and I’m currently a student. (A minor) And my family holds PR status. The issue is that I do not have a Myanmar NRC.

My main concern is uncertainty around Myanmar documentation and renunciation requirements. Since obtaining an NRC for overseas-born citizens involves township immigration processes, the outcome can be difficult to predict.

I understand that without an NRC, outcomes for passport renewal or renunciation may vary. I am also concerned that current practices may change over time and requirements could become stricter.

The options that I am currently weighing now are:

Option 1: Apply for SC now (as a minor)

Pros: Potentially obtain citizenship earlier.

Cons: I must complete the renunciation process by age 21. If that is not successful due to the lack of an NRC, I am concerned about how it may affect my status.

Option 2: Wait until age 21 to apply

Pros: I can attempt the renunciation process and if it becomes too complicated or unsuccessful, I heard that I can choose not to proceed with the SC application and still have my PR status as a safety net.

Cons: A longer wait and potential changes in approval criteria in the future.

some questions that I have are;

Is waiting until 21 generally considered the safer path? And are there any alternative solutions to this?

I would appreciate any insights or shared experiences. Thank you!
