National service rhetoric rubs the wrong way

Hi! Do you ever listen to scott talk about something you know something about and it just reveals how out of touch he is?

While I agree with his call for national service, his specific talking point imagines raw teenagers as capable of elite firefighting roles: "I think young adults would really benefit from mandatory national service... a structured program where they could meet other great Brits and Americans in healthcare, senior care... being smokejumpers."

Smokejumpers are the airborne special forces of wildland firefighting. All recruited smokejumpers have years of experience in elite firefighting units. And yet, still 50 percent washout. His attitude that a kid off the street could just be a smokejumper not only gives his target audience unrealistic expectations but denigrates the hard work it takes to be a smokejumper.

Why does he do stuff like this?
