Help with layout ideas for large 90s contemporary kitchen

Our current kitchen is oddly both too big but also too small. It currently has a short L with sink and dishwasher, a long wall with fridge and wall oven, and an island with cooktop. There is a large eat in space by the windows/sliding doors. The space is cut up by doorways and a dropped ceiling.

Our wish is to switch from a cooktop in the island to a range with vent hood on the long wall (likely to the right of where the oven currently is). We would either keep the fridge and sink where they currently are or else swap them.

We would prefer to keep the island for working or eating only, and not have it used for sink or cooktop. We cook a lot, have kids, and tend to be messy, and the current downdraft ventilation just isn’t cutting it for us.

We’re not at the fun phase of picking cabinet or counter finishes yet but still trying to get a sense of layout. One designer suggested a truly massive island and getting rid of the eat in space, another suggested a smaller island and keeping both. Both feel sort of awkward, because the space is so long and disjointed.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make this work? Would love to hear your ideas for what you would do in our position!
