I’ve worked for a large national profit for the last almost 8 years. It was my first gig fresh out of college. During that time I went from an administrative assistant, to working in fundraising in a similar admin role, to becoming a manager, to now overseeing annual giving. Also during that time we experienced closure during COVID, I was nearly laid off (two days after getting married mind you), my boss was fired, our CEO retired, we got a new CEO, my temporary boss left (who I adored), three of my teammates left, I got a new boss, we added three new teammates (but one just recently left after 5 months), and now more people in leadership are leaving (some of whom have been with this organization for nearly half their lives). The toxicity of upper management has started to reveal itself within the last year. I’m burnt out from carrying the bulk of the department’s load because of leadership instability. I’m exhausted. I also do not live in the city I work. I commute nearly two hours round trip to work everyday. I want to spend more time with my family. I want to be able to focus more on my health and wellbeing. I would love to transition into a remote role around either project management, events management, etc. I would prefer not to stay in fundraising. I have some key individuals I am planning to go to for guidance, but I wanted to check here to see if anyone else has experience going from non-profit to another non-profit or to for-profit. This was the place I was planning to retire from, so this is a painful change but it’s one I need to make. I appreciate any words of wisdom and advice!
