What Actually Gets an ASM Promoted to Co?
Hi everyone, I have a question for Store Managers and Co-Managers in this group.
I’ve been with the company for almost 5 years and have worked across multiple departments. I’ve been an ASM for nearly 2 years now, and I’m interested in moving into a Co position that recently opened in my market.
I’m trying to understand what specific traits, skills, or results I should focus on to be considered ready for the role. Most of the feedback I’ve received so far has been pretty vague, like “you need to look after the whole store,” which I already try to do daily.
I’d really appreciate honest advice from people who have made that jump or have promoted ASMs into Co roles. What separated the successful candidates from the rest? Were there specific metrics, leadership behaviors, business knowledge, people development, or operational skills that mattered most?
I want to spend the next 2–3 months intentionally working on the right things before applying, so any guidance would be appreciated.
Also, if there’s anything I might be overlooking or not thinking about, please let me know. Thanks in advance.
