Hey,

I’ve got a WD Elements 4TB external drive with a damaged USB 3.0 Micro-B port (photos attached). The inside of the port is bent and not making proper contact anymore.

I ordered a replacement port, but when it arrived I noticed it’s slightly different — mainly a bit thinner than the original one. Now I’m not sure if it will align properly with the pads on the PCB.

My questions:

  • Can I use this slightly thinner replacement port or is that just going to cause problems with alignment/contact?
  • Is it possible to rearrange/bend the pins to match the original layout or is that a terrible idea?
  • Should I just hunt down the exact same connector instead?

Also, what would be the proper way to fix this so I can actually keep using the drive normally as an external drive after the repair? I don’t just want to recover the data once — I want it to work reliably like before.

Would replacing the port properly be enough, or is there a better approach (like wiring a different connector or some kind of adapter)?

I’ve done some basic soldering before, but this is definitely on the small/delicate side, so I’m not trying to completely ruin it.

Any advice is appreciated.
