Equine assisted therapy and learning certifications?
Hey all!
Having spent years in corporate, I’m looking to a next chapter, and missing working with horses.
I’ve been in the horse space on and off for 13+ years in various capacities (riding instructor, working student, college equestrian team, equestrian summer staff ect) horses were honestly what got me through so much throughout my life.
Because of my own personal experience, really been drawn to learning more about the connection between horses and mental wellness.
I’d like to explore EAS, and done quite a bit of research on programs, certs. Honestly, overwhelmed by the amount of cert options in the US! Eagala, PATH, Natural Lifemanship, OK Corral, and Reflective Horse.
My questions two fold i suppose (maybe three) for anyone in this space:
What certifications are most widely recognized and preferred by programs in the US? Specifically for pursuing facilitation of equine learning and therapy? Are there programs that specifically emphasis the horse’s well being, and autonomy?
I’ve volunteered at a program as an equine specialist in the past, but noticed most eas have dedicated equine professionals who are typically licensed as LPC, LCSW, ect. Is that necessary? Are there paths or certs I could start with that lead to opportunities without licensing (it’s likely something I’ll pursue later down the road).
Are there any reputable programs recommended to explore in the US, (ideally in central CA)?
Suppose I’m just looking to understand what the best first steps might be here! If anyone in the field is open to a chat would love to connect.
Thanks in advance!
