Regretful Decision

I attended a police academy not too long ago, back in ’25, and I resigned from the academy. I regret that decision every day. A few weeks later, I started taking edibles and smoking marijuana for about five months. I would not consider my use chronic — typically, I would take a 10mg gummy at the end of the day while watching TV or playing video games.

I plan to be completely honest during the background investigation, but I was wondering if there is generally a timeframe for when I could begin applying again. Should I wait a year before reapplying to the same police department?

I am currently in college pursuing higher education, and I have also started doing community service because I want to be part of something greater than myself. I believe I had to go down a different path in order to better understand which path is truly right for me.

Any insight regarding the application process would be greatly appreciated. I do feel ashamed of my past decisions, but I want to make sure there is still a possibility of being accepted. The department does not provide much detail regarding its marijuana policy; however, marijuana products, including edibles, are legal to purchase from licensed businesses in the state.
