Looking for a cruiser that can actually skate

As above, actually skate = transitions, flatbars, small street obstacles etc.

I've been skating for 15 years and will have hips surgery that may affect my capabilities.

Looking for set up/brands advice -- maybe somebody who rides wide board, soft wheels and stuff and feels comfortable doing some boardslides, 50s, simple flat ground tricks etc.

Unfortunately, no more stairs, handrails and risky spots for me.

28M, bilateral Perthes + CAM impingement — possible return to skateboarding after hip arthroscopy?

Hey everyone,

Male, 28 y/o. I’ve been skateboarding for around 15 years and I had bilateral Perthes disease as a kid/teenager (back then they told me it was “hip joint inflammation,” but now it’s clear it was Perthes).

I’ve just been referred for bilateral hip arthroscopy surgeries. My diagnosis from the referral is:

- Primary bilateral coxarthrosis (M16.0)

- Bilateral femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) – CAM type

- Planned arthroscopic or open cheilectomy, starting with the left hip

I’m wondering if there’s anyone here with a similar background — especially people who skate, snowboard, BMX or do other high-impact/extreme sports.

How was your recovery and return to sport? Were you able to get back to skating/jumping/landing tricks? How long did it take before you felt confident again?

I’m also trying to figure out what I should be doing before surgery. My first procedure will probably happen within the next year.

From what I understand, I probably shouldn’t aggressively force mobility in the restricted/painful ranges (for me that’s mainly hip abduction and internal rotation), especially since the limitation is structural/mechanical.

Would it make more sense to focus instead on general strength, hip/glute stability, core, and staying active without constantly irritating the joint?

I still train and skate, and interestingly the hip often feels “better once warmed up,” but I’m trying to avoid making things worse before surgery.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone with Perthes/FAI experience or athletes who went through hip arthroscopy.

Thanks!
