Biostatistician / Bioinformatician Volunteer Role Description
About the Opportunity
One Patient One Cure (OPOC) is a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit developing CureCancer model for personalizing treatment for rare and treatment-resistant cancers. We integrate multi-omics data, clinical literature, and patient histories to accelerate drug discovery and support truly personalized oncology care.
We are seeking volunteer biostatisticians and bioinformaticians to support the statistical and analytical rigor of our research. This is a remote, flexible, project-based role for experienced professionals who want their expertise to directly shape how AI is applied to one of medicine's hardest problems.
Role and Responsibilities
As a volunteer in this role, you may be invited to:
- Review and validate statistical design for AI model development on rare cancer cohorts including cross-validation strategy, data leakage controls, and small-sample inference on high-dimensional genomic data
- Support analytical planning across multi-omics datasets including genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic layers
- Collaborate with our internal engineering and internal team on data wrangling workflows and quality control procedures.
- Contribute to technical reports, abstracts, or peer-reviewed publications arising from CureCancer research
Project scope and timing will vary. Involvement is matched to your interests and availability.
Qualifications and Expertise
We are looking for individuals with:
- Background in biostatistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, or computational biology (MS, PhD, or equivalent experience)
- Proficiency in R, Python, or equivalent statistical tools but technical work is optional
- Familiarity with high-dimensional biological data or multi-omics analysis
- Interest in rare disease research, precision oncology, or AI in healthcare
Time Commitment
- Flexible and project-based
- Typical engagement: 10-20 hours per project
- Projects may arise several times per year depending on development phase
Benefits of Participation
- Formal contributor credit on CureCancer research outputs
- Co-authorship on papers, technical reports, or conference presentations where applicable
- Access to OPOC's network of institutional collaborators and our strategic partnership with Institute Itech S.r.l. (Milan)
- First-priority consideration for paid professional or advisory roles as OPOC moves into funded development.
