El Morro National.Monument overlanding options

Hey friends!

I'm super stoked to take my family on a car / tent camping road trip for the first time since starting a family. I have reservations at state and national parks, except for one stop - El Morro National Monument.

Because El Morro is first-come-first-serve I'm looking for good backup recommendations. I know Joe Skeen is close, but because it is also small (10 campsites) and also FCFS, I'd like to have other options ready.

Although, the majority of our stops are car camping, we will be driving a decently equipped 4x4 vehicle, so we are open to dispersed / primitive camping.

Does anyone have any experience in the area. I know El Malpais or BLM areas may be an option, but looking for some guidance from someone who knows.

Would like to stay close to El Morro if possible, as our next stop is due East in Cottonwood, AZ.

I am greatly appreciative of any insight!
