My grandpa died today

He was 95 and the youngest of 8 children. Lived through WW2 in Germany and had endless stories to tell about the tribulations (literal beatings and narrow escapes from death, mostly) he and his family experienced while attempting to undermine the Nazis. He moved to the US when he was just 18 and never moved back but he told me he really missed it. His hometown is no longer there.

He always sounded SO happy to hear from me when I called him. I loved him so much. He always wanted to talk about European sports leagues and he loved Trader Joe’s.

He lived on the other side of the country from me and, though I called him regularly, I hadn’t had a chance to actually see him in over 6 years. I finally was able to make time for me and my fiancé to see him just a couple of weeks ago, just in time for his 95th birthday (we have the same birthday so we were just always kind of kindred spirits).

He and I both bawled when we left. I think we both knew it would be the last time we saw each other. He told me he wished me a happy life. He always gave us German liquor (when age-appropriate obv) and Austrian cookies. I hope he is with my grandma, who died decades ago and who he missed dearly. I’m grateful I got to see him one last time. I will really miss him. Sorry this is jumbled. I’m just so sad. I love you Opa. Sorry I posted your eulogy on redscarepod.
