Randomly thinking about the title. Like Wu was initially a warlord rather than a god (though I seem to remember he went full god long before the show), that dude trying to be Jaffa Che Geuvara seemed to have a pretty good racket going.

Is it just in their nature to get too power hungry and arrogant and go with literal god? Is it for obedience in the ranks?

It feels like there may be benefit I'm being like a boss, politician, business mogul I dunno. People your controlling not knowing your actually anything other than life them seems like it may have some perks to it as well now I think?
