New manual driver question

Hello everyone. I’m new to driving a manual. Recently got myself a 1994 Celica and have been having a blast. I’m curious to know if it’s possible to accidentally downshift into reverse gear. I don’t want to try it and risk damaging my transmission. Every time I downshift I overcompensate and end up shifting into 2nd from 5th before throwing it back into neutral. I would like to know if I need to be worried as I have heard of gear lockout? I’m not sure if my car, as old as it is, would have it. Hoping to find out so I can shift back to 4th a little easier. Thanks!
