Is this a good way to use a reference? Not sure if this is really a good way to learn

Mostly referring to the breakdown of shapes I did. But I’m also not sure this is a good way to learn. I say this cause it feels like cheating in a way, copying feels like it skips the process. Especially in digital art where you can endlessly adjust your work and “liquify” the shape. Everyone says to use references when i look up tutorials but is there a wrong way to do so? What exactly should my mindset be as I’m working on it?

Just vaguely learned hair, what now?

The drawing is without reference. I’m a bit lost on where to go from here. My first 4 days consisted of learning the frontal guidelines for a face(not loomis), learning one to three point perspective with boxes, generally working on long lines and circles, learning eyes and today was hair. I was rushing a bit to just be able to put something together. But now I’m left wondering if I should refine/improve what I’ve learned or try learning something new like changing perspectives or shading, learning the body etc. if you were my tutor what would you say? I use both procreate and real sketchbooks
