How do you taper strength training?

I have a Fenix 6 Pro Solar and am noticing persistent issues with distances being inaccurate. Today I wanted to run a 1 mile TT around my block that is a 1 km loop. I know it’s exactly 0.61 miles because I’ve run it many times with the watch on. I also did a 1 lap warmup and it measured exactly 0.61 then as well. Then I planned to run exactly 1 mile and hit the lap button to restart my lap distance. I ran until it hit 0.39 and made a mental note of where I was in the neighborhood so I knew where I would need to stop on the next lap. Then finished the lap and got back to where I made a note of and was only at 0.92 miles. No idea what the issue is but it’s annoying enough that I’m thinking of getting a new watch.
Anyone experience issues like this with the 6? Are the new ones even better at distance tracking than the 6?
TIA
Personally my favorites are long runs and anything on race day. I don’t particularly like threshold runs and very much don’t enjoy intervals, but do them because it’s part of the plan.
I suspect most people feel the same way but am interested to hear other people’s takes.
