None of my thornless blackberries are producing flowers/fruit, but all my thorned varieties are producing wonderfully. What gives?
I have a bunch of thorned blackberry bushes (link) and thornless (link). All in the same location, same light, same water, same pruning, same fertilizer....
I have one set of each that were planted in March 2025.
- The thorned variety has produced many many flowers and berries.
- The thornless variety right next to it has grown just as tall and seems vigorous, but has never produced a healthy flower or fruit (there have been maybe 3-5 dud flowers/buds that never actually blossomed).
Similarly, I have another set of each type of bushes planted in September last year and these are behaving the same way. The thornless are not showing any signs of flowers or berries.
Is it normal for this thornless variety to take multiple years to even produce the first flowers? What else can I do to stimulate production?
