Preamble: I reviewed the rules and hope this is ok based on the automod's warnings, and have read prior posts that are similar, but they're a bit old. I've had to game the "H R V", but I've been searching through other posts that talk about this exact thing...
I'm athletic, middle aged. I've been wearing a vivoactive for a couple of years. My h r v has never crept up out of the low 30's night time average - 29-31. On a very odd occasion, I'll see it in the 70s at night, continually rising and I can _feel_ that, I wake up a different person.
After refining my outlook and how I interact with the world, something I have dubbed "radical acceptance," I feel like I'm getting better at learning how to rest. Working on this for about a year, I've greatly boxed in my areas of concern about work, life, etc... which is a very difficult thing to do. Controlling your thoughts is also stress/work. Meditation has been important, sauna. Accepting that my older body can't handle what my younger one took on with ease.
My sleep is interesting, I get 1-2 hr of deep immediately, then light, and all of my ~1h REM (very consistent,) happens just before waking. I used to wake up at 4, 5, unable to fall back asleep - but all of the usual things ( low light, reading, blocked out windows, cooler room, no phone before bed,) have it to where I can pass back out for 1-2 hrs 😄 😄. Or sleep until 6 or later. Working on the discipline to try to ease into the evenings even more, hoping to get some more blocks of REM. My sleep scores used to be in the 50's, now in the 70's or even into the 85 range but the app always complains I don't get enough REM.
My morning stress is high to the point that I often rush to the bathroom for a BM while I'm making coffee. This is improving, some days it doesn't happen any more. I've consulted with my doc about this, had the usual tests to make sure it's nothing serious. Before I became a dad and had some ptsd inducing work experiences, this wasn't a thing. My current relationship with work is very good.
It's been a _long_ road these past 5-6 years. If you've taken the time to read my background, I'm wondering if you can give me some feedback, is h r v worth monitoring, will I continue to see gains if I'm walking precisely, have you seen any, how did it change the way you felt? Has anyone seen their REM sleep stages change, move to different times of night, improve?
TIA! We're all in this together 😉
