[Discussion] Can I pursue illustration work in a market that my agent doesn't work in?

Hi, I've been with my agency for over two years, and I can't find anything in the contract that can answer my question. I am going to contact them, but I wanted to see what other people thought here.

My agency works in the education market, and I've been getting steady work. But I'm also hoping to get into graphic novels in trade publishing, probably the US market. Does anyone have experience with switching markets? Is it even possible for me to pursue that kind of work and have my agency represent me? If so, could I pursue that myself? They do represent me exclusively worldwide.

Thanks for any feedback, I'm still learning about the industry :) Curious about other people's agency experiences as well.
