JC Holdaway Review
Awhile back I asked for restaurant suggestions and we decided on JC Holdway. We have been to Foothills Milling, RT Lodge, and Dancing Bear already. Foothills had been our favorite so far.
Here is our review of JC Holdway. We both ordered the chefs tasting menu, $129, a person. We had oysters and pork belly biscuits, both delicious. We both decided on the steak tartare for the 2nd course, it has pickled shallots so my husband didnt care for it (hes picky), but I thought it was absolutely decadent, I could eat it 3 meals a day. Then I had a risotto and my husband had a chicken, egg, gnocchi situation. Both were good, I wish the description on the risotto had been a little more...descriptive. The gnocchi chicken was the better of the 2 dishes. Then we both had the steak, which is our main comparison to Foothills. The taste and crust was better, the cook on the steak wasnt as good. The steaks at Foothills are literally like butter. I had an almond cake thing with a fancy name and it was divine and my husband had a chocolate tart which was a basic chocolate tart.
Atmosphere wise we both preferred Foothills, quieter, less cramped, and cooler (but we went in winter). Food wise I preferred JC Holdway and my husband preferred Foothills. We would eat at JC Holdway again but not order the tasting menu.
We are excited to try:
The Walnut Kitchen, Osteria Stella, DSB provisions, Northshore Brassarie, The Appalachian, The Kennedy.
Current top 3:
Foothills Milling
JC Holdway
Caramella
Even though I would put this delicious food I had(but my husband didnt) in Richmond, at a furniture store, at my number 2 or 3.
