Rhode Island Energy invalid debt
I’m dealing with a nightmare situation with Rhode Island Energy and looking for help/suggestions.
I used RIE while living in Providence for college 2 years ago. They SUCK and I had so many issues with them constantly. I still always paid my bills on time tho.
A month before moving out, I submitted a stop-service request for the day before I left, received confirmation, and paid all outstanding bills.
A month after moving, I got another bill but ignored it because I’d received incorrect bills from them before because they’re run so poorly.
Recently, while getting a credit check for a new apartment application, I found out RIE sent a supposed $1,157.62 debt to collections through IC Systems without ever notifying me.
I contacted RIE who told me they couldn’t help and directed me to IC Systems. IC Systems told me to dispute the debt, so I mailed them all my documentation, including proof of the stop-service request and payment history. A month later, they simply mailed back a “verification” of the debt with account statements. They completely ignored my dispute and evidence showing I shouldn’t owe anything after I moved out.
I then filed a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau but they were unable to send the complaint to RIE. Instead they just forwarded back to IC Systems and I haven’t heard anything since.
I have no idea what to do at this point. I know I don’t owe the money and refuse to give into another RIE fuck up.
