Question regarding BYOS/BYOD (larapaper and android app) in order to try out TRMNL before buying

Hi everyone,

I'm considering buying a Terminal X but wanted to test how it works before placing the order.

TLDR up front: is it possible to use the trmnl android app as a BYOD device with a BYOS setup (larapaper hosted locally on my NAS via portainer) to test this out?

Longer version:

I wanted to try out how the general concept works and what to display before buying the Terminal X, due to lead times and also for the wife approval factor. My goal is to create a home assistant dashboard to display family relevant information on the device to replace the current nest hub as a larger but less intrusive setup.

I do NOT have any background in IT but have always been what my mom would call "good with computers" and have set up a small homelab with home assistant, paperless-ngx and some other stuff by following tutorials and adapting to my needs. However, this is where I am failing now. Since this use-case is still "niche", I couldn't find any tutorials so I am going at it in a trial and error approach.

I chose larapaper and not terminus, as it seems that this would make it easier to try plugins. I have managed to set it up via portainer on my Synology NAS, but I am now failing to connect the android app to the server, as I seem to be missing some information (such as the API key and/or access token). Funnily, the phone does seem to be recognized by the server (it shows up on the dashboard), but the phone can't connect, telling me that device setup is required.

Therefore I want to know if this approach is even possible or if I misunderstood something. If it is possible, could someone maybe point me in the right direction on how to set this up? I also have an older Kindle lying around, that I could try to jailbreak and set up, if that works better than the Android app. Or is this basically impossible without deeper programming knowledge?

Any help is appreciated!
